Season of temptations

BOPA11FEB09A04_1.jpgRetailers are in business to make money and fulfil a need for goods and services that consumers have. They provide jobs for people, by employing workers in their retail businesses, plus jobs for the people who have produced the goods they sell in their stores.

At Christmas time they can provide solutions when you want to buy a gift for someone. However, it is important for consumers to realise that retailers want you to buy as much as possible, so it is up to you to control your emotions before buying a purchase that you are not able to pay for fully right now.

Advertisers will appeal to your emotions to get you to buy. Have a look at some of the following words I have picked out from adverts

Now match them with the list below to identify which emotion or tactic advertisers/retailers are using to get you to part with your cash.

Health and well-being, feeling good, lack of something, comfort, popularity, being new, humour, security, value, fun, convenience, excitement, lack of something, freedom and something for nothing

An interesting family activity to do can be to watch all the adverts on TV and discuss each one trying to decide which tactic advertisers are using to try to get you to buy while at the same time training your children to read between the lines and recognise adverts for what they are.
