Attitude towards money

BOPA11FEB09A04_1.jpgOver the last few weeks I have been doing a series on attitudes about money, where these attitudes (beliefs) come from and how those beliefs influence how you handle money.

Your beliefs about money and everything else have been formed in four ways. 1) From the things you hear. 2) From the things you see. 3) From the individual experiences in your lives 4) From your parents, culture, society, media, teachers, and the advertising and lending industries.

You are most probably not aware of what you believe deep down about money because you have never thought about it.

I encourage you to think about your thinking.   Listen to what comes out of your mouth – do you say “money is a pain” “money is made round to go round” “people with money aren’t happy” or  “rich people are greedy”.

Ask yourself questions such as I wonder why I overspend? Why can’t I save anything - if that is what you do. Your actions will be connected to the beliefs you hold about money and everything else. That is why it can be very helpful to spend some time thinking about your thinking.p_1_1.jpg

One belief that could hold you back from becoming and staying financially well is “Money is a burden – it is a big responsibility”. If you think of money as a burden, you will find a way not to have that burden – for example, spending excessively, or not saving anything for the future.

What you believe will influence what you do with your money.  If you believe money is a burden, spend some time, thinking about which one of the four areas listed above where this belief could have come from. Once you have identified where the belief came from, ask yourself if this thought is rational (based on reason) or is it irrational (lacking logical thought). If you come to the conclusion that this thought is irrational, write down that irrational thought, then cross it out and replace it with a thought that is logical such as money is a tool that can be used to help others, it isn’t a burden.
If you believe that money is a tool, you will find ways of holding on to your money and get your money working for you so you can help others.
